I have been a follower of Marie Forleo’s for over a few years. I find her videos and insights to be simple and to the point. Her motto, “Less IS more,” and I have been on that band wagon for the past year. So of course the worksheet download didn’t work right for me, and regardless I have my own style of making lists aligned with the design of myLife Planners that I procrastinated by creating my own worksheet which I am offering to you!Read More
I was tagged in my a client to work with a new organization as they developed their business model and messaging.
The creative brief outlined the purpose of the group to better utilize the various grants provided by the Province of Alberta. It's mission is to create opportunities for various sporting organizations to work together to apply for grants to create more impact in sport and recreation in Alberta.Read More
This last week has been filled with moving client projects forward as well as tying up this one in particular. The latest was a project with the United Way Chapter of Calgary. I was called in by their Director Communications, whom I worked with a few years back during my University of Calgary days, to help their in-house creative team with a specific special event branding project.
When is the last time you actually took a full two weeks away from your business?
I have to admit that for me, it has been so long I don’t even recall when. Add to that, traveling with my mom who is a completely different stage of life than I.
I find I am constantly running (metaphorically here - there has been no actual physical exercise these days) between demands. Running a business, raising two teen daughters, and trying to fit in some ‘life’ in between.
What matters more? Content or Design?
In my research and observation, I have been taking note of what other businesses do with their newsletters. They are touted as the ‘unicorn of marketing’. The best tactic for building and connecting with your clients and customers. How they format, what is their messaging strategy and what is it about their subject lines that feel like ‘click bait’ and I just have to open them to read more.
One thing I have noticed are distinct email designs can be categorized into three different camps.Read More
It was a treat and an honour to have the opportunity to collaborate with an old friend as he builds a business based on community, value, and sustainability.
Together we developed a visual brand identity through communication, based on trust and respect for what each of us brought to the table.Read More
Developing a brand is not a flashy affair. It is a lot of hard work, making mistakes, that add up to long-term success.
One thing I have learned over the years is that when starting a business, you need to focus on what matters and keep things simple. Especially when you are a one-person show. There is an insane expectation we put on ourselves that we need to have all the bells and whistles in place before we can start selling our product or service. Just throw that out the window now!Read More
What is your definition of success? I'm sitting here at my dining room table on a Saturday morning. I am, for all intents and purposes, alone, disconnected and sitting in the quiet all but for the ticking of our kitchen clock, the hum of the refrigerator and the sounds of the birds as they fly by my window.Read More
Feedback, criticism, critiques, whatever guise it is when someone provides their opinion on something about you, what you do and create. I have been taking ‘advice’ and ‘feedback’ from clients for over twenty years, and it’s a skillset I have realized. We aren’t necessarily educated in our early years how to deal with being told what we screwed up on.Read More
I have been talking about this talk for a few months, ever since I got the booking with CreativeMornings four months earlier. I have had the topic in the forefront and back end of my mind this whole time. I trusted in the creative process that works for me. I allow the ideas to coalesce in my mind.Read More
I would like to share some insights as well as affirmations about what ducking out of the year can mean for self-employed/entrepreneurs! I had mentioned in my email that my office would be closed starting Wednesday, Dec. 20, and re-opening once my girls head back to the school grind on Monday, Jan. 8 in the new year.
Are you curious about what happens during this 'time off'? Will I be languishing around for two and a half weeks chilling out?
Umm no. I will, of course, be making an effort to take time away from my business and enjoying the holiday with family and friends. But after those 4 days, I will be back at my desk, with myWeek in hand working at...
Holy crap! December. Seriously. It’s freaking December! It has been a year of ups, downs, sideways and sometimes backsteps. 2018 will be my 45 years of breathing and the one thing I do appreciate about adding more years to that number is the perspective each one brings. Not unlike rings on a tree, the lines and marks on my skin reflect time and moments.Read More
II have moments of reflection when my mind draws connections and today I got thinking about my personal experience with body image. I am not alone in saying that this has been a defining issue for me in my 40+ years. And I am not about to get all ranty, but I found some parallels with body image and making choices about company branding I wanted to share.Read More
At a design conference the suggestion came out that in order to do better creative, we need to create in a box of limitations. When you have so many creative options at your fingertips like I do. Whether it's the latest design software, amazing creative books and resources, and don't get me started on the plethora of industry professionals I have access to, all of this multiplies the variations and options I have. Yes, too many options is a problem.Read More
Something that has been on my mind these days is the effect the digital world is having on how we relate to each other. In so many ways the increased connection has opened so many doors I appreciate and value, but I am also aware of the doors it is closing as well.Read More
Who knew back in high school when I obsessed over my first-day planner, this would lead my life towards creating, publishing and selling my unique version. A 25-year journey, sticking to what I believe in, is making ripples. Not your current ‘start-up’ mentality that you need to make waves and assumes if you don’t make it ‘rich’ within a year you have failed. My business experience is more like an extended road trip through life, and I love being the one who is driving.Read More
It has been an "interesting" week.... okay let’s be real, life is chaotic. After 43+ years, I don't see that changing, and when you have a creative brain that just..will not…STOP, you can either embrace it or head for the hills! With a desire to create a break from the constant activity in my brain I am currently trying some daily meditation and am on day 4 of a 10-day Headspace meditation app. So this insight is born from an internal creative thought that wants to worm its way out into the world. A heads up - this write up is a bit of a ‘personal short story’ which does spin back to creative business, so please bear with me.Read More
